Coal prices rose sharply in Kazakhstan: by 13% per year
These are the results of January-December 2022, reports inbusiness.kz with reference to Energyprom.kz.
In the first month of this year, 10.4 million tons of hard coal, including brown coal and coal concentrate, were mined in the Republic of Kazakhstan – 2.3% more than a year earlier.
The key producing regions – Pavlodar and Karaganda regions – expectedly accounted for 90.7% of the total production volume. In Pavlodar region, 6.6 million tons of coal were mined, 5.3% more than a year earlier; in Karaganda – 2.8 million tons of coal, minus 4.9% per year.
One of the largest thermal coal producers, Shubarkol Komir JSC (ERG formation, Karaganda region) is implementing a project for the production of special coke with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year, RK MIIR reports. In October 2023, it is planned to launch a new plant for the production of special coke, which will increase the capacity of the enterprise to 400 thousand tons per year. Also, since July last year, the enterprise began work on the production of activated carbon. The main task of the project is to solve the issue of import substitution.
Hard coal in January of this year was mined 9.4 million tons – 2.4% less than last year. Including the production of coking coal amounted to 517.9 thousand tons (a decrease over the year – by 39.3%), energy – 1.1 million tons (minus 8.5%).
The extraction of brown coal (lignite) increased immediately by 14.7%, to 673 thousand tons, the extraction of coal concentrate, on the contrary, decreased by 33.8%, to 242.2 thousand tons.
For reference: in general, in January-December 2022, production in the sector amounted to 118 million tons, which is 2% more than a year earlier*.

According to the results of January-December 2022, Kazakhstan exported 29.5 million tons of hard coal in the amount of $946.5 million. The growth in physical terms was 1%, in monetary terms – 89.3% at once.
It is noteworthy that 20.2 million tons of coal were sent to the CIS countries (13% less than a year earlier), in the amount of $283.1 million (minus 27.9% for the year). Russia became the main importer of Kazakh coal: 18.6 million tons (minus 2.4% per year), by $213.3 million (minus 7.9% per year). Further among the Commonwealth countries, to which our coal was supplied, are Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
At the same time, 9.3 million tons of coal were sent to the rest of the world, which is 55.3% more than last year. Although in tons, exports from Kazakhstan in this direction turned out to be more than half as much as to the CIS countries, in terms of money the situation is reversed: the amount amounted to a significant 663.3 million dollars – 6.2 times more than a year earlier, and 2. 3 times more than the figure for the CIS countries. Here, the main volume was sent to Switzerland, Poland, Turkey, Cyprus and Latvia.
Тем временем на внутреннем рынке РК по итогам февраля текущего года каменный уголь подорожал на 12,6% по сравнению с февралём 2022-го.
В региональном разрезе рост цен на уголь сильнее всего ощутили жители Улытауской области: сразу на 66,2% за год. В тройке антилидеров также оказались Актюбинская (плюс 27,4% за год) и Туркестанская (плюс 23,3%) области.
Наименьшее годовое удорожание было зарегистрировано в Акмолинской области: на 1,8%. В Западно-Казахстанской области цены остались на уровне прошлогодних.
